Beware: Bebe blouse

The Drycleaning & Laundry Institute issued a warning for this Bebe blouse with multi-bead trim.

This blue, silk sleeveless blouse with smocked waistband has various beaded trim at the neckline and upper bodice area. The care label recommends dry cleaning.

When this blouse is dry cleaned, some of the beaded trim is adversely affected. The flat oval beads partially dissolve. Additionally, a loss of color/finish/sheen can develop on all of the beads. This creates objectionable discoloration and staining in the areas adjacent t o the beaded trim.

Bead damage of this type can occur in the first dry cleaning process, or be progressive over several dry cleanings.

ZIPS Tip: Beaded trim looks great and can add sparkle and swag to your garments. Be aware that all beads are not created equal and some can dissolve in dry cleaning solvent, no heat required. Unfortunately there are not accurate methods of testing beads to determine if they durable to cleaning.

Since 1972 the Federal government has required all manufacturers to provide at least one safe cleaning method. Since this blue silk beaded blouse was unable to withstand the manufacturers’ recommended cleaning method the garment is defective and should be returned to the store or manufacturer.

DLI also pointed out that Bebe is not knowingly or continually producing defective goods.  While this silk blouse with beaded trim is defective, that does not mean any other garments from Bebe are defective.

Beware: Liquid White Coat With Black Trim

The Drycleaning & Laundry Institute issued a warning for this Liquid blazer.

This white soft-napped coat has black trim made from a blend of polyester/rayon/spandex. The care label recommends dry cleaning.

When this ladies coat is dry cleaned, a component of the dye in the black bleeds out and self-stains the white base fabric. This creates objectionable discoloration in the areas adjacent t o the black trim, as well as areas that the black trim contacts during the agitation in dry cleaning.

Dye bleeding of this type can occur in the first dry cleaning process, or be progressive over several cleanings.

ZIPS Tip: Black and white mix or color block garments have increased in popularity over the last few years. Many garments are durable to recommended care procedures. Others are not durable and can cause discoloration on the garment, or other garments cleaned in the same load.

Since 1972 the Federal government has required all manufacturers to provide at least one safe cleaning method. Since this white jacket with black trim was unable to withstand the manufacturers’ recommended cleaning method the garment is defective and should be returned to the store or manufacturer.

DLI also pointed out that Liquid is not knowingly or continually producing defective goods.  While this white coat with black trim is defective, that does not mean any other garments from Liquid are defective.

Beware: Trina Turk Cream Silk Blouse With Black Bead Triim

The Drycleaning & Laundry Institute issued a warning for this Trina Turk ladies blouse.

This cream silk blouse has a black beaded design on the front and around the collar area. The beads are glued on the surface of the fabric. The care label recommends dry cleaning.

When this blouse is dry cleaned, the glue or adhesive softened, which allowed some of the beaded trim to fall off.  Shaded spots or glue dots can also be noted in the areas of the missing trim. This damage can occur in the first cleaning, or be progressive over several cleanings.

ZIPS Tip: There are many different types of glues and adhesives available to manufactures to use in garment construction. Thus, it is possible for glued-on beads on one garment to be perfectly attached to one garment after cleaning, while the glued-on beads on another garment can be partially or completely removed, even if the garments are dry cleaned in the same load. Unfortunately, there is no way of completely determining the durability of the glue/adhesive and beads prior to cleaning.

The beaded trim was partially removed when drycleaned.
Since 1972 the Federal government has required all manufacturers to provide at least one safe cleaning method. Since this silk blouse with a glued-on black beaded design was unable to withstand the manufacturers’ recommended cleaning method the garment is defective and should be returned to the store or manufacturer.

DLI also pointed out that Trina Turk is not knowingly or continually producing defective goods.  While this blouse is defective, that does not mean any other garments from Trina Turk are defective.

Beware: Men's White Nordstrom Smartcare Dress Shirt

The Drycleaning & Laundry Institute issued a warning for this men’s Nordstrom Smartcare dress shirt.

The white buttons down the front of this men’s cotton dress shirt dress discolor during professional laundry and pressing. The written care label recommends washing in warm water, only use non-chlorine bleach, tumble dry low, warm iron. The care label also has corresponding International Code Symbols.

ZIPS Tip:  Ever wondered why you can’t get that smooth, crisp look on a men’s dress shirt when you hand iron them at home? Cleaners press men’s dress shirts while slightly damp, which provides that smooth finish and the crisp look. Want an even crisper finish? Just ask for starch!

Normal consumer garment care practices include taking men’s dress shirts to the cleaners for professional care. When this dress shirt is professional finished, the heat in pressing causes the white buttons to discolor to a yellow or tan cast. The discoloration of the buttons may occur in the first professional care process, or may be progressive over several professional cleaning and pressings.

As noted by DLI, there are many types of white buttons that can be used on men’s dress shirts that will not be adversely affected by professional cleaning and pressing over the entire life of the shirt.

Since this damage only develops on the buttons, the buttons can be easily replaced when discoloration occurs, which will return the shirt to a wearable condition.

DLI also pointed out that Nordstrom, Inc is not knowingly or continually producing defective goods.  While this shirt may be considered defective due to its inability to withstand normal consumer care procedures for men’s laundered shirts that does not mean any other garments from Nordstrom, Inc are defective.
