Beware: Men's White Nordstrom Smartcare Dress Shirt

The Drycleaning & Laundry Institute issued a warning for this men’s Nordstrom Smartcare dress shirt.

The white buttons down the front of this men’s cotton dress shirt dress discolor during professional laundry and pressing. The written care label recommends washing in warm water, only use non-chlorine bleach, tumble dry low, warm iron. The care label also has corresponding International Code Symbols.

ZIPS Tip:  Ever wondered why you can’t get that smooth, crisp look on a men’s dress shirt when you hand iron them at home? Cleaners press men’s dress shirts while slightly damp, which provides that smooth finish and the crisp look. Want an even crisper finish? Just ask for starch!

Normal consumer garment care practices include taking men’s dress shirts to the cleaners for professional care. When this dress shirt is professional finished, the heat in pressing causes the white buttons to discolor to a yellow or tan cast. The discoloration of the buttons may occur in the first professional care process, or may be progressive over several professional cleaning and pressings.

As noted by DLI, there are many types of white buttons that can be used on men’s dress shirts that will not be adversely affected by professional cleaning and pressing over the entire life of the shirt.

Since this damage only develops on the buttons, the buttons can be easily replaced when discoloration occurs, which will return the shirt to a wearable condition.

DLI also pointed out that Nordstrom, Inc is not knowingly or continually producing defective goods.  While this shirt may be considered defective due to its inability to withstand normal consumer care procedures for men’s laundered shirts that does not mean any other garments from Nordstrom, Inc are defective.

Beware: Rebecca Taylor Dress

The Drycleaning & Laundry Institute issued a warning for this defective Rebecca Taylor dress.

This dress has a pink silk blouse, with a pink/multi-colored skirt made from chenille yarns. (ZIPS Tip: Chenille yarns are very similar to the pipe cleaners or fuzzy yarns used for arts and craft projects. When used in fabric, the material must be loosely woven or knit to retain the desired fuzzy textured appearance.)The care label recommends dry cleaning.

When this dress is dry cleaned, the loosely woven chenille yarns can be easily snagged. Once snagged, the yarns dangle from the fabric, creating overall distortion to the skirt and an objectionable appearance. Additionally, snagging of this type can originate from conditions of use and be further aggravated during cleaning.

Since 1972 the Federal government has required all manufacturers to provide at least one safe cleaning method. Since this dress with the chenille woven skirt was unable to withstand the manufacturers’ recommended cleaning method the garment is defective and should be returned to the store or manufacturer.
The snagged chenille yarns dangle from the surface of the skirt fabric.

DLI also pointed out that Rebecca Taylor is not knowingly or continually producing defective goods.  While this dress is defective, that does not mean any other garments from Rebecca Taylor are defective.

Beware: Defective ASHRO Gold Metallic Pants

These pants exhibit a wrinkled and puckered appearance after dry cleaning.
The Drycleaning & Laundry Institute issued a warning for these defective pants by ASHRO.

These gold ladies ASHRO pants are made form a blend of metallic, nylon, silk and cotton fibers, with a cotton lining. When dry cleaned, as recommended on the care label, the stiff metallic fibers distort, creating a rippled, puckered and shrunken appearance.

ZIPS Tip: Fabrics containing metallic fibers have similar properties to aluminum foil. The foil is flat when removed from the roll, but once it has been folded or crumpled, it is permanently distorted and cannot be flattened out again.

Since 1972 the Federal government has required all manufacturers to provide at least one safe cleaning method. Since these gold metallic blend pants were unable to withstand the manufacturers’ recommended cleaning method the garment is defective and should be returned to the store or manufacturer.

DLI also pointed out that ASHRO is not knowingly or continually producing defective goods.  While this pair of metallic pants is defective, that does not mean any other garments from ASHRO are defective.
